When you go searching into the firearms training marketplace, you discover a wide array of offerings in a number of settings. A large percentage of these offerings are in a group setting. Group classes offer great benefits to the gun school, the main one being profit margin – the more people you can teach for the same cost of teaching, the more money you get to keep. But what happens to the student? If you have a class of shooters at the same level, it can go quite well for everyone because they are learning at the same place. But what about a group of shooters at different levels? Often the pace of the class moves towards the highly skilled because it becomes easier for the instructor to hold drills. The beginner student gets left behind.
When you train at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you get to learn in a private session. Private at TPA is defined as no more than 4 shooters on the firing line. Why 4? Because it creates a training nexus where each student receives individual attention yet allows the students to learn and work together with new skills and safety. Each student and the instructor is responsible for safety, and the more the merrier, while maintaining individual shooter attention from the instructor. Depending on the training series you are taking, the 4 people you begin a series with becomes your fire team, and you get to experience more in depth training with shooting, moving and communicating as a fire team. The camaraderie that builds from a small and private firing line is something special to see form over a day of training, and makes the class more memorable for each participant.

Arguably the most trusted and respected of all American firearms is the centerfire rifle. The modern improvement upon its ball and powder ancestor, the modern rifle is a technological masterpiece the early creators dreamed of. Featuring a multitude of calibers for all types of game at ranges up to and including 1 mile, the modern long range rifle is a weapon platform second to none. But for all the technology inside today’s modern rifle, the fundamentals of marksmanship must be mastered to harness the potential of any gun. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can take the Long Range Rifle Series that consists of Basic & Advanced courses to give you a firm foundation in the fundamentals of marksmanship and long range shooting
What you get
The Long Range Rifle series begins in the classroom. Here you will discover the combat triad of shooting a long gun at range, and what the responsibility of the gun and shooter has to be. Proper shooter friendly rifle setup and a proper cleaning technique are reviewed to deliver a clean bore – cold bore first shot performance. Discussions on windage and elevation, the MOA system and the fundamentals of external ballistics round out the classroom portion. Then an extensive dry fire session follows where you get onto your gun and dry fire the firing sequence that focuses on bone supported, muscle-relaxed shooter performance and communication with your spotter. On the firing line, in both the basic and advanced courses, discovery of your DOPE out to distance and mastery of the firing stroke will help you master your weapon and your cartridge. As always, the private setting at TPA allows for the student to train in depth to the degree they demonstrate they are digesting the curriculum – you can drink from the water fountain or the firehose.

Often the most misunderstood weapon platform in the gun safe, the pump action shotgun is capable of far more than the mythology surrounding it would belie. Primarily only thought of as a hunting weapon, the shotgun has been defending life and property since well before cartridge weapons were invented. You can take a modern, unmodified, pump action shotgun and learn to use it as a rifle at distance and a close quarter battle weapon with devastating effect. The key factor is training. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can take the Tactical Shotgun Series that consists of multiple courses to give you a firm foundation in weapons handling, movement and engaging multiple targets.
What you get
The tactical shotgun series consists of a basic, intermediate and advanced course list. The basic class introduces you to the pump action shotgun, but semi auto shotguns are always welcome. Discussing what the shotgun is capable of, and dispelling myths that surround the shotgun, into the way into fundamentals of weapon manipulation to get the gun into action. The incredible versatility of the pump shotgun is emphasized throughout the course series, and drills focus on creating a thinking shooter that understands ammo selection is a critical aspect of good shooting. Upper level courses emphasize movement and cover scenarios. As always, the private setting at TPA allows for the student to train in depth to the degree they demonstrate they are digesting the curriculum – you can drink from the water fountain or the firehose.

Often demonized, the AR-15 and similar semi-automatic carbines are in more gun safes across the Unites States than ever before. But despite their infamy in the modern media, there is no denying their ease of use regardless of your physical stamina and their force multiplying effect for the lone defender of the home. Whether you use yours for hunting, personal defense or both, you should have the training to get the rifle into action and to keep the gun running. Shooting, moving, and communicating in team exercises are also a critical component of team tactics and should be developed when you and your friends with AR’s have to consolidate effort and work together. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can take the Fighting Carbine Series that consists of multiple courses to give you a firm foundation in weapons handling, movement, and team exercises.
What you get
In the basic class you begin with the fundamentals of marksmanship for the rifle. Much of this work focuses on the basics of good body position around the gun for maximum stability and shooter performance. This enables good zeroing, and creates a muscle memory for getting the gun into action from distance. As the course levels progress, you are groomed as a shooter in all the capabilities of the M4 platform. From distance to room clearing, you get training and exposure to skills that will enhance your capabilities with this rifle. These skills will enhance your ability to run the gun under stress. Shoot house and low light courses enhance your awareness of how to move and use your rifle in enclosed spaces and what types of movements enable to get shots on target in close quarters. As always, the private setting at TPA allows for the student to train in depth to the degree they demonstrate they are digesting the curriculum – you can drink from the water fountain or the firehose.

One of the most ubiquitous weapons in the American personal arsenal is likely the handgun. Synonymous with personal defense, handguns are often handed down from parents or gifted during milestone celebrations like moving into a first home, or welcoming a first child. Whatever the occasion, the handgun is recognized as a means of personal defense and hearth and home. But having a true defensive posture requires more than just the tools to get the job done. Training to use the handgun is as important as owning the handgun. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can take the that consists of a basic, intermediate and advanced level courses to give you a firm foundation in weapons handling.
What you get
The Basic Level course is perfect for anyone who has never held a firearm, or those needing a refresher in the fundamentals of gun handling. Body position and grip, 3 types of reloads, 3 types of malfunction clearing matched with a practical exercise is enough to give the novice student plenty to do during a full day of training. The Intermediate Level builds upon the Basic by adding off-hand shooting and weapons manipulation and movement. When you reach the Advanced level, you are ready for training that lets you deploy your weapon from your everyday carry position. The Advanced level is taught from your concealed carry posture, or however you carry your handgun daily. As always, there is a low-light level course available for the handgun series that immerses you in the same training you have had but in darkness. As always, the private setting at TPA allows for the student to train in depth to the degree they demonstrate they are digesting the curriculum – you can drink from the water fountain or the firehose.

When using the terms first vs. third person you can automatically remember some of what you learned in high school literature class. But here, the context is more direct. Will you save yourself? Or will you wait for someone to save you? Circumstances call for different responses but have you considered what tools you will need, beyond resolve, to help yourself in any situation? Weapons training at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy is one ingredient in your plan for salvation that starts with taking a first person role in your own defense.
How will you respond?
The training you will receive at TPA in the use of a pistol, bolt action rifle, combat shotgun, or M4 carbine gives you the mental and physical tools you need to solve many of the problems you face from an attacker. Part of this training involves grooming the shooter’s mindset to pursue a positive self-preservation interest to drive their dedication to training and individual practice. Believe it or not, some mindsets you will find in the wild rely heavily on third party pressure to bring relief to an assaulted party. You have to face the fact that some people will not act even to save their own lives. But you can be different. Train at TPA in any of the weapon disciplines and sleep better at night knowing you will be an immediate responder and not have to wait for the first responders to arrive.
Call Josh Duhon today (214) 663-3910 and get started on your path to be the first person you can rely on to help you overcome the challenges you may face today!
Getting wrapped up in the endless debates about caliber stopping power, what is the best handgun, what rifle would best apply in a certain situation is easy when all you know is gear. Although being a gear guy is a fun and expensive hobby, what if you could buy something that would transcend the type of handgun or caliber you shot? What if you could purchase something that could even transcend weapon systems? When you purchase firearm training at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy you get a firearms shooting protocol that is designed to help the shooter perform under stress.
The Combat Triad
At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, each weapon platform is taught using the combat triad inspired by the military. Modified for efficiency, the TPA combat triad has 3 sides that help the shooter succeed. The base of the triangle is good equipment. You don’t have to be a gear junkie to understand that good equipment is gear that stays out of the shooter’s way. The second side are mental and visual focal points – the mind and eyes have to be somewhere useful when the shot is fired. Finally, the third side is called “sending the bullet” and details the steps the shooter executes to consistently get point of aim, point of impact performance no matter what weapon system they choose. Whether you choose to shoot an M4 carbine, bolt rifle, pistol, or combat shotgun, you will find the training you need to succeed.
Call Josh Duhon today (214) 663-3910 and discover the knowledge you need to succeed and how the TPA combat triad can take your shooting to the next level.
A famous photograph is circulating around the internet that shows a lone worker refusing to give the Nazi salute when everyone around him is saluting. Although the pedigree of the non-saluter has been disputed, the facts are that on June 13, 1936 at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg Germany at the launching of the training vessel Horst Wessel, one man refused give the Nazi salute at the launch, folding his arms over his chest. Although it may not seem as brave as charging a machine gun nest, imagine standing among your coworkers, in the height of the power of the Nazi regime, and refusing to comply. Bold is too small a word. Although some identify the man as August Landmesser, and others as Gustav Wegert, there’s no doubt that on that day, one man was incredibly brave and refused to go along with the mob.
What role will you play?
With the resurgence of the assault on the 2nd amendment, all Americans should understand that everyone has a role to play. You will have to decide what yours will be. For some this means arguing with your friends on the internet, for others they may join the NRA, others still will back certain political parties. No matter what side you are on, people are mobilizing right now in the attack and in the defense of the 2nd amendment. Who will win is as undecided as it was during the American Revolution. But the best defense of a right, is the exercise of that right. When you train at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you are exercising the right to bear arms enshrined in the Bill of Rights. The ability to shoot and having the resolve to do so is part and parcel of what it means to be an American. You can do your part by training at TPA with a pistol, shotgun, M4 carbine and bolt rifle. Throughout history, only a people that could defend themselves had the ability to live freely.
Call Josh Duhon today (214) 663-3910 and exercise your freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, even if it means going against the grain.
It should be no surprise that once again, the wolves who would weaken the U.S. Constitution by eliminating the 2nd amendment are at the door. Gone are the platitudes about common sense gun control. Evidenced by a recent New York Times editorial, the goal of the anti-gun crowd is reflected in their latest headline “To Repeat: Repeal the Second Amendment.” So to what refuge should law abiding citizens who believe in all the rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights go towards in these troubled times? You should go to where countless professionals have gone since time immemorial, to your training.
The Eye of the Storm
Fall to the level of your training and you can fight any battle and face any enemy. How far you fall is dependent upon your training. Train frequently, and in a variety of skills and you will create a nurturing ecosystem of expertise that will help you weather any storm. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can train in a variety of weapon systems and evolve into a person who can shoot with a combat mindset no matter what bang stick you place into your hands. The key is frequency and in-depth content, no matter if you shoot a pistol, bolt action rifle, M4 carbine, or combat shotgun. Each repetition of the firing stroke, and each round fired under stress inoculates you to the chaos that may be swirling around you. In the most violent hurricane, the eye is calm. You can be the calm eye of the storm if you invest in your training and put in the hours of work. As you can plainly see, they are after the gear, but no one can steal your training or your mindset, and you can develop these at TPA.
Call Josh Duhon today at 214-663-3910 to develop your personal eye of the storm to you can prevail in the midst of chaos and remember knowledge is light, gear is heavy.
There are plenty of things to be afraid of, spiders, snakes, water, falling, flying, failing, commitment, success the list goes on and on. But none are as deeply paralyzing, as the fear of fear. In fact, this fear runs so deep and so pervasively in some that the idea of taking action towards remedy is frozen in place. This is especially seen in people who want to do “something” to protect themselves against a threat but have no idea what to do. This state is often enhanced by their minds churning day in and day out about all the bad things that could possibly befall them and their families. But there is hope.
“Fear is wisdom in the face of danger” has been attributed to Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes. Many envision the warriors and first responders who face down danger to be completely fearless in their duties, but this could not be farther from the truth. Fear is an asset that keeps you alive, and like a powerful racehorse can do great damage if not properly controlled. What is the best way to control fear? Training. When confronting a threat to your safety you can control the fear you will feel by having a body of training that you can rely on to eliminate the threat. The foundation of training is repetition, and this along with a sound firing stroke is exactly what you will find at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy. Whether you choose to use a handgun, shotgun, bolt rifle or M4 carbine you will succeed in these sound and proven training protocols.
Call Josh Duhon today at 214-663-3910 to take your first steps into a world where fear is just another tool in your toolbox forged to help you prevail.
There is no shortage of vendors for firearms, firearm accessories, and supplemental gear all touted as giving you the “edge” in your shooting endeavor. Do you want to shoot faster? Then someone has a trigger kit to sell you. Do you want to shoot more accurately? Someone has a new optic or set of sights to sell you. Want to run faster, jump higher, or stretch farther? Then someone has a pair of pants, a shirt, tactical socks, sunglasses, ball cap, and probably tactical boots to sell. Clearly, American capitalism gives us all a chance to make a buck and that’s amazing. But as a shooter, it’s important not to confuse having increased your shooting abilities by spending to increase the quantity or quality of your gear.
The shooter shoots
But what is good equipment? For over 30 years, Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy has been a shooting laboratory, and its instructors shooting researchers who are masters in their field. In that time the data shows that good equipment is gear that gets out of the shooter’s way so their firing stroke can progress uninterrupted. The preferred handgun at TPA is the Glock 19, for no other reason than it is an uncomplicated handgun with no extra buttons that get in the way. For the bolt rifle, we like to see large target turrets with the numbers printed on the exterior so a student doesn’t have to break their hold to make elevation and windage adjustment. New students are encouraged to come as they are, and if they do not have a firearm one is available from the school in a configuration that makes learning the firing stroke for a given weapon system easy to obtain because the gun isn’t getting in the way. The key to remember is that good shooting comes from the shooter, not the firearm.
Call Josh Duhon today at (214) 663-3910 to schedule training and discover how good shooting comes from the shooter and not their equipment.
In every great story throughout history, there is an event that is recorded as a critical moment. Somewhere in the unfolding of events, a critical moment had to be met that would, in turn, create a cascade of actions that would become legend. At these critical junctures, heroes or tragedies are born. An example would be David & Goliath. Goliath was a warrior unrivaled on the battlefield…until he met David. David was a Nobody until he killed Goliath. Although your life may not be recorded for the ages, your life will be replete with critical moments and critical choices. For instance, you must choose to take firearm training if you have any hope of proficiency.
When you choose to take firearms training you are making a decision that can reward you over a lifetime. If you choose to gain proficiency in the bolt rifle, combat shotgun, handgun or M4 carbine you will be rewarded with a skill that could save your life. Training at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy offers you the opportunity to gain a skill that will serve you in potentially your darkest hour. When you choose to use a firearm as part of your personal defense strategy, the rest of your life is on the line. Succeed and your life gets longer, fail and a tragedy may unfold that lasts a long time. Although Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius were quoted in saying “you may leave life at any moment…” attaining the skills you need for a proper defense is never a time that is wasted. Now you have the presence of mind to make a critical choice. Choose wisely.
Call Josh Duhon today at (214) 663-3910 to begin your critical pathway to develop shooting proficiency and change your life today!
Most modern self-help books, programs, and speakers traffic in the dark art of motivational speaking. Handing out a healthy dose of Ra-Ra-Ra-Sis-Boom-Bah to get people off their couch and out the door to exercise, eat right, do more work, or whatever is a multi-billion dollar industry. But whether the speeches or posters offer a dose of I’m ok-You’re ok, or a pat on the back masquerading as tough love, the input is still motivational speaking and the outcome is often less than hoped for – a flurry of activity that swiftly wanes once the real grind begins. The same happens in shooting. Whether the catalyst is a personal or 3rd person anecdote about a shooting, robbery or other incident people often run out, buy a gun, then get their license to carry. But after the memory begins to fade, the gun lands in the safe only to be thought of when the next story comes along. But is there a way to combat this ebb and flow of motivation and build something durable?
Whether you decide to shoot a handgun, bolt rifle, M4 carbine, or combat shotgun the training you receive at Texas Pistol and Rifle Academy is a shooting discipline. When someone is disciplined in a behavior, they will execute an action regardless of their internal or external environment. The training you receive at TPA is perfect for your shooting discipline as each training program offers a systematic and repeatable method of shooting a weapon. If you continue your practice of the methods you learn at TPA you will develop a shooting discipline that you can execute under the most austere condition. Imagine what your world would look like if no matter your mood or the weather, you practiced your shooting discipline.
Call Josh Duhon today at (214) 663-3910 to begin your pathway to develop a shooting discipline and change your life for the better!
In modern books about success, authors often focus on having the right intention. For many, this goes beyond the common “why” you want to do something. Some even go as far as a formal dedication to their intention before they undertake a task – like self-improvement for the sake of a family member, or running a marathon in memory of a lost comrade. But intentions aside, what really counts, is action. What actions are you taking? When considering your shooting goals, what actions are you taking towards them?
Men of Action, women of action
If you intend to shoot a pistol, combat shotgun, bolt rifle, or M4 carbine this year nothing will help you towards your goals like committing to training with that weapon platform. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy you can take the steps you need to be successful. Training is a step you can take even before you own a firearm. At TPA you can rent the weapons you need to take immediate action toward training. Ultimately, few want to tell, and fewer want to hear the stories of what someone wanted to do. Legends only tell tales of what they have done, and perhaps what they would have done differently given more time on the Earth. Don’t let your intentions be betrayed by the passage of time. The time for action is now. Take the steps you need to train with the weapon system of your choice and become proficient and confident. Become the person of action on the firing line just like you are in your day to day life. Once you finish you will have a skillset that you can practice and be proud of.

Although the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, it is beyond the first step that begins the pathway to mastery. With the advent of the New Year, the first wave of broken resolutions are beginning to litter the floor of half-hearted lives. The key to progress isn’t about will, but having a stepwise plan to achieve your goals. Whether your goal is to be a better pistol, bolt rifle, M4 carbine or combat shotgun shooter, Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy has the classes and the plan to help you achieve your goals.
Mastery on the range and beyond
What you will learn at TPA is a stepwise program that is created to instill confidence and competence in the new and experienced shooter. Every first class for each weapon system offers the essentials of the fundamentals for successful weapon manipulation. Here you will receive a sound foundation of how to use your mind and body to deliver consistent, well-aimed shots on target with every trigger press. Your pathway to mastery begins with the Basic series of classes. To be successful, we encourage you to dry fire practice the fundamentals you learned in your time away from the range between classes at TPA. Learning techniques at TPA, then taking them home and practicing on your own, then coming back for the next level of class is the formula for success if you want to be a masterful shooter. With this cycle of learning, training, and then learning more you can forge your own pathway to success no matter what weapon system you choose to master. Let this year be definitive in your mastery of your personal safety and success.

Although no one knows when it started, the commemoration of victory is as long as human history. Certainly, the first humans to throw a high five are long since forgotten, but you can trace the word “hooray” back to Ghengis Khan as he rolled across the Steppes. But is it the finish that makes something worth celebrating? Or is it more about knowing where you started from, and how far you have come, that makes victory worth celebrating?
It’s the height that makes the mountain
At Texas Pistol and Rifle Academy, there is special recognition that all students receive. When someone commits to a class, they are essentially telling us that they have looked at themselves in the mirror and acknowledged that they are lacking. Confessing that there is something that you don’t know takes a special kind of courage. Make no mistake, gun handling and training in a course of fire can be extremely challenging. But overcoming this challenge, and better still, gaining mastery of a skill that you felt deficient in is a real victory. Whether you shoot the pistol, bolt rifle, M4 carbine or combat shotgun, you have the opportunity to be better. But this begins with the long hard look in the mirror to acknowledge that what you know isn’t enough. Take those first few steps in training at TPA and you will be richly rewarded with a skill set that few can claim. Better still, you will have the deep satisfaction of knowing where you started in your training and savoring how far you have come. This is a victory worth celebrating and savoring. Begin your training today and get on the path of success with your firearms training and pepper your life with moments of victory.
