Advanced Handgun #450

Welcome and Orientation to #450 Advanced Handgun – Review TPA Training Triad & Safety

Your day begins in the classroom with a reorientation and reintroduction to the TPA Training Triad. The Training Triad is the foundation of every course taught at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy. The Training Triad has 3 sides that together help you shoot well. On one side is “mental & visual focus” – since your mind and eyes can only focus on one thing at a time, putting them in the right place is critical for good shooting. The next side is “sending the bullet”- here, the steps of a successful firing stroke are explained to help you deliver point of – aim point of impact shots. The final side is “good equipment” – this describes what characteristics are desirable in a handgun to make it shooter friendly. A thorough safety briefing is presented covering firearm safety rules. You will also be briefed on how to conduct yourself on the range and in the dugout area where you will store your gear and ammo.

Refresh and Review of #250/#350 Handgun Courses

Your day on the firing line begins with a thorough refresh and review of the gun handling portion of the Basic Handgun #250 and Intermediate Handgun #350 course. Here you will be refreshed on proper body position, proper grip, sight picture, and trigger press. Presentation of the handgun to the target from the transition ready position and the holster are also reviewed in this refresher session that reinforces the “sending the bullet” side of the Training Triad. Three types of reloads and three types of malfunction clearing are also reviewed in this session. You will also review how to use either hand to present your handgun to the target, align your sights and shoot effectively. You will also review how to transition to the other hand safely. One-handed reloads with either the strong or weak hand will also be reviewed.

Shooting from Concealed Carry

The most unique feature of the Advanced Handgun #450 Course is that you are taught to draw and shoot from the concealed carry posture. Here you will learn three methods to draw your handgun from concealment depending on the concealed carry method you choose.

Threat Management with Handgun (Here’s my keys!)

In this phase of the course, you will learn how to use dialog and your handgun to manage a potential threat for application in the real world. This includes learning methods for developing a strategy as well as a practice dialog. This phase of the class is a critical session with everyday application.

Quick Reaction Drills

Defensive shootings can happen at very close distances, even closer than arm’s length. Here you will learn how to safely and effectively draw from concealment and engage your target in very close quarters. These types of Quick Reaction Drills are the foundation of personal handgun defense and essential to your shooting skill set.

Problem Solving in Shoot House

Towards the end of the training day, you will go to the shoot house for your final exam. Here you will be tasked with a shooting problem to solve using all the skills you have acquired through the Defensive Pistol Series. You will complete this shooting task from the concealed carry posture for real-world application of Marksmanship Under Stress.

Graduation

At the end of the training day, you will participate in a graduation ceremony where you receive a certificate of completion for your training effort.
