One of the most ubiquitous weapons in the American personal arsenal is likely the handgun. Synonymous with personal defense, handguns are often handed down from parents or gifted during milestone celebrations like moving into a first home, or welcoming a first child. Whatever the occasion, the handgun is recognized as a means of personal defense and hearth and home. But having a true defensive posture requires more than just the tools to get the job done. Training to use the handgun is as important as owning the handgun. At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you can take the that consists of a basic, intermediate and advanced level courses to give you a firm foundation in weapons handling.
What you get
The Basic Level course is perfect for anyone who has never held a firearm, or those needing a refresher in the fundamentals of gun handling. Body position and grip, 3 types of reloads, 3 types of malfunction clearing matched with a practical exercise is enough to give the novice student plenty to do during a full day of training. The Intermediate Level builds upon the Basic by adding off-hand shooting and weapons manipulation and movement. When you reach the Advanced level, you are ready for training that lets you deploy your weapon from your everyday carry position. The Advanced level is taught from your concealed carry posture, or however you carry your handgun daily. As always, there is a low-light level course available for the handgun series that immerses you in the same training you have had but in darkness. As always, the private setting at TPA allows for the student to train in depth to the degree they demonstrate they are digesting the curriculum – you can drink from the water fountain or the firehose.

When using the terms first vs. third person you can automatically remember some of what you learned in high school literature class. But here, the context is more direct. Will you save yourself? Or will you wait for someone to save you? Circumstances call for different responses but have you considered what tools you will need, beyond resolve, to help yourself in any situation? Weapons training at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy is one ingredient in your plan for salvation that starts with taking a first person role in your own defense.
How will you respond?
The training you will receive at TPA in the use of a pistol, bolt action rifle, combat shotgun, or M4 carbine gives you the mental and physical tools you need to solve many of the problems you face from an attacker. Part of this training involves grooming the shooter’s mindset to pursue a positive self-preservation interest to drive their dedication to training and individual practice. Believe it or not, some mindsets you will find in the wild rely heavily on third party pressure to bring relief to an assaulted party. You have to face the fact that some people will not act even to save their own lives. But you can be different. Train at TPA in any of the weapon disciplines and sleep better at night knowing you will be an immediate responder and not have to wait for the first responders to arrive.

Getting wrapped up in the endless debates about caliber stopping power, what is the best handgun, what rifle would best apply in a certain situation is easy when all you know is gear. Although being a gear guy is a fun and expensive hobby, what if you could buy something that would transcend the type of handgun or caliber you shot? What if you could purchase something that could even transcend weapon systems? When you purchase firearm training at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy you get a firearms shooting protocol that is designed to help the shooter perform under stress.
The Combat Triad
At Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, each weapon platform is taught using the combat triad inspired by the military. Modified for efficiency, the TPA combat triad has 3 sides that help the shooter succeed. The base of the triangle is good equipment. You don’t have to be a gear junkie to understand that good equipment is gear that stays out of the shooter’s way. The second side are mental and visual focal points – the mind and eyes have to be somewhere useful when the shot is fired. Finally, the third side is called “sending the bullet” and details the steps the shooter executes to consistently get point of aim, point of impact performance no matter what weapon system they choose. Whether you choose to shoot an M4 carbine, bolt rifle, pistol, or combat shotgun, you will find the training you need to succeed.

A famous photograph is circulating around the internet that shows a lone worker refusing to give the Nazi salute when everyone around him is saluting. Although the pedigree of the non-saluter has been disputed, the facts are that on June 13, 1936 at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg Germany at the launching of the training vessel Horst Wessel, one man refused give the Nazi salute at the launch, folding his arms over his chest. Although it may not seem as brave as charging a machine gun nest, imagine standing among your coworkers, in the height of the power of the Nazi regime, and refusing to comply. Bold is too small a word. Although some identify the man as August Landmesser, and others as Gustav Wegert, there’s no doubt that on that day, one man was incredibly brave and refused to go along with the mob.
What role will you play?
With the resurgence of the assault on the 2nd amendment, all Americans should understand that everyone has a role to play. You will have to decide what yours will be. For some this means arguing with your friends on the internet, for others they may join the NRA, others still will back certain political parties. No matter what side you are on, people are mobilizing right now in the attack and in the defense of the 2nd amendment. Who will win is as undecided as it was during the American Revolution. But the best defense of a right, is the exercise of that right. When you train at Texas Pistol & Rifle Academy, you are exercising the right to bear arms enshrined in the Bill of Rights. The ability to shoot and having the resolve to do so is part and parcel of what it means to be an American. You can do your part by training at TPA with a pistol, shotgun, M4 carbine and bolt rifle. Throughout history, only a people that could defend themselves had the ability to live freely.
Call Josh Duhon today (214) 663-3910 and exercise your freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights, even if it means going against the grain.
